The history of Knorr® is a story of passion, exploration and food innovation, and it began 175 years ago with coffee and chicory.
High-quality is our food philosophy – one that’s been years in the making. Our story starts back in 1838, when Carl Heinrich Knorr opened the first Knorr® kitchen in Heilbronn, Germany, supplying chicory to the coffee industry.
He began to experiment with drying vegetables and seasonings, to preserve nutrition and flavour, which led to the launch of the first Knorr® dried soups across Continental Europe in 1873.
This breakthrough ushered in a string of advancements, from the introduction of the nutritious ‘Erbswurst’, or pea soup, in 1889, to our pioneering Knorr® European sauce mix in 1908.

And then there were Stock Cubes
In 1912, we unveiled something really exciting: the first Knorr® Bouillon cube (bouillon is French for broth) which later became known as the Knorr® Stock Cube. Now families could enjoy delicious dishes at home without the need to make stock from scratch. This humble little product proved a hit.
In 2008 we launched Knorr® Stock Pots. These rich and tasty little pots melt smoothly into your dishes and enhance the natural flavour of your fresh ingredients instantly. Just one example of how, with dedication and a lot of love, we always endeavour to help you cook better meals every day.
Flavours of the world
Knorr® is available in every country around the world. We pride ourselves on a genuine understanding of local flavours, providing great tasting favourites and helping you sample authentic cuisine from other cultures.
In 1957, our stocks and soups were sold in Ireland and seven other countries. By 2000, Knorr® products were sold in nearly 90 countries around the globe. This led us to an important milestone that same year, when Knorr® joined the Unilever family.
Always searching for the best flavours
Throughout the 20th century, we launched many exciting recipes around the world, including Knorr® Soups across Europe. In fact, Knorr® products are now enjoyed by 320 million people every day and still carry the iconic signature of Carl Heinrich Knorr, with whom it all began.
In Ireland, our product range includes recent additions like our Knorr® Season & Shake Baking Bags and Knorr® Gravy Pots, launched in 2011 and 2012, alongside old favourites like Knorr® Dry Sauces and Knorr® Aromat.
Today our kitchens are playgrounds to hundreds of real chefs – passionate experts working together to hone recipes that help you serve up tasty meals time and again.

Marco Pierre White
2007 saw the Knorr® Stock Cube celebrated again, this time by chef Marco Pierre White, when he revealed “I have used Knorr® Stock Cubes in my kitchens for 30 years. It is my secret ingredient”.
Later that year, Marco became a brand ambassador for Knorr® and today he continues to champion Knorr® Stock Pots and Knorr® Stock Cubes as a simple way to add instant flavour and help everyone from complete beginners to more experienced foodies get the most out of their cooking.
The love of flavour is not the only passion at the heart of Knorr®. In 2010, we launched our Knorr® Reduced Salt Stock Cubes, but this is just the beginning of our quest. Globally, by 2020, we have committed to doubling the proportion of Knorr® products that meet the highest nutritional standards based on globally recognised dietary guidelines.
