Here at Knorr® we’re proud of the quality of our food, with our passionate chefs using fine, tasty ingredients.
THE SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE AT KNORR®
We bring the same passion for quality in our food to our quest for sustainability, because we firmly believe that food grown responsibly is the best approach. It means reducing water consumption to produce our crops. It means protecting the environment and biodiversity in the areas surrounding our farms.
As a member of the Unilever family, Knorr is proud to be part of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, which drives our 2020 ambitions and commitments. You can find out more about the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan right here: http://unilever.com/sustainable-living
As part of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, Knorr is currently focused on four key areas, on a global scale:
- Sustainable sourcing
- Waste reduction
- Greenhouse gases
1. SUSTAINABLE SOURCING
KNORR SUSTAINABILITY PARTNERSHIP
We’ve launched the Knorr Sustainability Partnership to develop a closer relationship with our suppliers, to improve knowledge and equipment, and to help face the new challenge of sustainable agriculture together. As a sign of our commitment, each year we’re investing one million euros to support the initiative. The partnership extends to various ventures, ranging from growing new and tastier varieties of basil in Milly La Fôret, France, to harvesting delicious tomatoes in Badajoz, Spain.
We have a big ambition to sustainably source ALL of our vegetables, meat, herbs and spices by 2020. And we’re already well on the way to reaching a milestone of sustainably sourcing our top 13 global vegetables and herbs by 2015. To make our ambition a reality, working with our suppliers, we have created the Knorr® Landmark Farms programme.
Growing and nurturing our produce in healthy, good-quality soil, with just the right amount of water is, in our experience, the best way to grow fine, tasty vegetables. It’s a quality we demand in all our ingredients.
Those among our supplier farms that are most advanced in sustainable farming practices have been made Knorr® Landmark Farms. This select group leads by example, demonstrating to our other farmers the positive impact that sustainable agriculture can have on the quality of raw materials – helping us to make great-tasting products, while protecting the environment too.
Food is our passion, and nutrition lies at the core of Knorr®. Globally, by 2020 we aim to double the proportion of Knorr® products that meet the highest nutritional standards based on globally recognised dietary guidelines.
3. WASTE REDUCTION
By 2020, we aim to reduce the waste material that goes to landfill by 50%, by investigating opportunities at every part of our supply chain.
We know that halving our environmental footprint is ambitious – but we are determined to make it happen by taking a multi-faceted approach, including reducing, reusing, recycling and minimising packaging materials from our products.
4. GREENHOUSE GASES
We’re also working on contributing to the Unilever goal of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2020. We will look to achieve this by introducing improvements in our manufacturing process and by using raw and packaging materials that require less energy input in their manufacturing processes.
We’re certainly taking on a challenge, but we think it’s the right thing to do. At the heart of all this is our love for food and flavour – because we believe that looking after the environment that produces our food can only make our ingredients taste better.
And we’ll go to any lengths, if it means even more delicious food on your plate.
